About 100 miles west — approximately a 2-hour drive via I-70 and Highway 91. Leadville is centrally located in the Colorado Rockies, making it a convenient hub for exploring multiple ski areas and mountain towns. Eagle County Regional Airport (EGE) near Vail is 55 miles away for those flying in.
Ski Cooper is 9 miles north with affordable lift tickets and all-natural snow. Copper Mountain is about 35 miles away (~40 min drive). Vail is approximately 40 miles (~50 min drive). Breckenridge and Beaver Creek are also within an hour. Leadville is the most affordable base camp for any of them.

At 10,152 feet, Leadville's altitude is noticeable — especially if you're coming from sea level. Drink extra water, avoid strenuous activity on your first day, limit alcohol intake initially, and give your body 24 hours to acclimate. Most people adjust within a day or two. If you're planning to hike a 14er, add an extra acclimation day before attempting it.
For skiing: December through March for the best snow conditions. For hiking and outdoor recreation: June through September. For fall colors: late September through mid-October (the aspen groves around Twin Lakes and Turquoise Lake are spectacular). For the best lodging value: October–November and April–May (shoulder seasons with fewer visitors).
