Twin Lakes is a tiny historic village (population ~150) where two of Colorado's most photogenic alpine lakes meet the eastern flank of Mount Elbert. The North and South Mt Elbert trailheads are both within ten minutes of the village. In summer, sailboats — drawn by the lake's reliable afternoon winds — share the water with paddlers, anglers, and SUP riders. In winter, the village goes quiet: Independence Pass over to Aspen closes November through May, leaving Twin Lakes as the literal end of the road.
Colorado's highest peak (14,440 ft) is also one of its most accessible 14ers — a non-technical Class 1 hike on a well-defined trail. The North Mt Elbert trailhead (Halfmoon) sits 7 miles north of town; the South trailhead is closer. Plan 8–10 hours round-trip and start before sunrise to be down by noon thunderstorms.
Twin Lakes is famous in Colorado sailing circles for its predictable afternoon winds funneling down from Independence Pass. Public boat ramps on the lower lake. Kayaks, SUPs, and small sailboats rent in season. The water is alpine-cold even in August.
From Twin Lakes, CO-82 climbs 26 miles over Independence Pass (12,095 ft) to Aspen — one of the most spectacular drives in the Rockies, with switchbacks, ghost-mining-camp ruins, and views of the Continental Divide. Open Memorial Day through early November. RVs and trailers prohibited.
The Arkansas River begins just north of Twin Lakes and offers gold-medal trout fishing within a 20-minute drive. Both lakes are stocked with cutthroat, rainbow, and brown trout. Lake Creek between the two lakes is a quiet wade-fishing favorite.

Leadville, 25 minutes north on US-24. Safeway and a small natural-foods store. There's a single seasonal general store in Twin Lakes itself — fine for snacks and basics, not a full grocery shop.
Among the easier 14ers, technically — it's a non-technical Class 1 hike on a maintained trail with no scrambling. But "easy" is relative: 4,500 ft of elevation gain over 9 miles round-trip at altitudes up to 14,440 ft. Train, hydrate, start by 5–6 AM, and turn around if afternoon thunderstorms move in.
Ski Cooper is 35 minutes north (small, family-friendly, locally beloved). Copper Mountain is about 50 minutes via Fremont Pass. Vail and Beaver Creek are 1.25–1.5 hours via I-70.
You can — but they're alpine-cold even at peak summer (typically 50–60°F). Most guests stick to paddling, sailing, fishing, or wading. The lakes feed straight from snowmelt above 12,000 ft.
