Vail was built from scratch in 1962 by Pete Seibert and Earl Eaton as an idea: a Bavarian-styled alpine village at the base of an enormous mountain. Sixty-plus years later it's grown into a world-recognized ski destination, host of the 1989 and 1999 World Alpine Ski Championships, and home to two pedestrian villages — Vail Village and Lionshead — connected by a free in-town bus that runs until 2 AM. In summer the mountain swaps lifts for chairlifts-as-bike-shuttles, the Bravo! Vail classical music festival fills the Gerald R. Ford Amphitheater, and the GoPro Mountain Games turn Gore Creek into a kayaking and climbing arena.
Vail's signature is the Back Bowls — seven open, treeless bowls that drop south from the front-side summit, totaling more skiable terrain than most full resorts. Beyond them, Blue Sky Basin offers tree skiing in some of Colorado's most scenic backcountry-feeling inbounds terrain. Front-side has groomers, gladed runs, and one of the best beginner zones (Eagle's Nest) in the Rockies.

Vail (June–July classical music), GoPro Mountain Games (early June), Vail Dance Festival (late July–August), Hot Summer Nights free concerts at Ford Amphitheater (Tuesdays), plus mountain biking off the Eagle Bahn gondola and hiking the Booth Falls or Pitkin Lake trails. Lower lodging rates than ski season and aspens turn gold in late September.
Mid-January through mid-March for the deepest snow and the most reliable Back Bowls conditions. Christmas-NYE and President's Week are peak crowds and peak prices. Late March-early April offers softer snow, longer days, fewer crowds, and the famous "spring conditions" cruising.
If you're staying in Vail Village, Lionshead, or West Vail and not planning to leave town, no. The free in-town bus runs until 2 AM. If you want to ski Beaver Creek (10 min east) or visit Avon, the free ECO Transit bus runs valley-wide. A car helps for grocery runs to City Market in West Vail or restaurant trips down-valley.
Vail is bigger (5,317 vs 1,815 acres), busier, has a more lively village scene, and offers the Back Bowls and Blue Sky Basin. Beaver Creek is smaller, quieter, famously well-groomed, more family-oriented, and includes the legendary 3 PM warm chocolate-chip cookies at every base lodge. Both are on the Epic Pass, both are Vail Resorts, and both are reachable in under 15 minutes from each other.
